Hello and welcome back to my weekly reviews of the new season of Twin Peaks. Today I'm going to be reviewing Part 16 which was finally 100%. This will be a spoiler review so please watch Part 16 before continuing.
We open Part 16 with the knowledge that Doppel-Coop has been given coordinates to two different locations near Twin Peaks. Having arrived at one but not trusting the information he gets Richard to investigate and he explodes in a ball of electricity whilst Jerry watches on from afar. In LA the FBI and Chantal and Hutch stakeout Dougie and Janey-E's house but the latter two come into contact with a very stressed out neighbour and meet a grizzly end.
Meanwhile Cooper lays in a coma but this doesn't last long as he suddenly wakes up, is informed by MIKE that Doppel-Coop is still out there and is given the owl ring. Cooper then tasks MIKE with creating a new tulpa of himself for Janey-E and Sonny Jim, asks the Mitchum brothers to fly him to Spokane, drops off Janey-E and Sonny Jim at the casino and says his goodbyes. In Dakota Doppel-Coop tasks Diane with killing Cole, Albert and Tammy, Diane tells them some important personal information, fails to kill them, is sent to the black lodge where her status as a tulpa is revealed and she receives the same fate as Dougie before her. Finally Audrey makes it to The Bang Bang Bar, is ushered to the dance floor for her song, is interrupted by a fight and then the scene abruptly flashes to her in a mysterious white room.
Being that we're so close to end of Season 3 I'd hoped that the narrative momentum would continue steam rolling on in Part 16 and I was not disappointed. Doppel-Coop and Richard's scene was a nasty, suspenseful piece of work and I loved the effects of Richard being disintegrated. I'd also assumed we'd seen the last of Jerry as he made it out of the woods but his fateful encounter with the two was great and provided some unexpected levity to the scene.
Likewise I did not see Chantal and Hutch going out the way they did but it was a great little, odd action set-piece and the Mitchum brothers' punchline was hilarious. Although I have some issues with how it was handled, more on that later, I couldn't help but be won over by Cooper's awakening. Words can't really describe how satisfying it was have Cooper finally, 100% back and the moment when 'Falling' swells on the soundtrack and he says 'I am the FBI' was just...yeah. I also love the way he deals with the Janey-E and Sonny Jim situation by creating a new tulpa for them (presumably a 'better' one to boot as it comes directly from Cooper and not his doppelgänger) and even I have to admit their goodbye in the casino was pretty damn moving.
And then we get to perhaps the highlight of the episode – Laura Dern and Diane. Laura Dern has played Diane brilliantly all season but her performance in this episode was a standout. The way she manages to convey the concept of a tulpa becoming self-aware and/or fighting the different sides of its self was impressive but her tearful description of her last interaction with Doppel-Coop was heartbreaking. And she even managed to get in a last, hilarious “Fuck you” to MIKE whilst in the the black lodge. Audrey's scene this week was also as mesmerising as it was bewildering. It was great seeing her perform her classic dance - and it was at this moment that I knew something was up – but from then on it only gets weirder as a fight (very reminiscent of last weeks) breaks out and she finds herself in that white room, a plot development which I found very promising.
So let's get this over with – whilst I'm very happy Cooper is finally back I really disliked how it was handled. First of all the fake-out with the coma was intensely frustrating and ultimately pointless. Secondly, and this is the big one, it really rubbed me the wrong way that he came out of it in perfect condition. We've basically watched him be a comatose, blundering fool for 13 episodes, with very little progress made during that time, and then suddenly he comes back as if nothing ever happened? To my mind this is just really poor pacing and it really rubbed me the wrong way. It also doesn't feel believable because, for the moment at least, he's almost acting like a superhero as he's showing no signs of regret, confusion or conflict whatsoever.
Finally I don't like the idea of him going off to Twin Peaks with the brothers Mitchum, or his assertion that they have “Hearts of gold”. The Mitchum brothers are nasty gangsters that are played for laughs – I don't want to see any more of them and they aren't people to be validated. The last thing that bugged me about Part 16 is that both Richard and Steven, the perpetrators of most of the on-screen violence against women this season, are now dead. It's yet to be seen as we still have two episodes to go but it's seeming more and more likely that Lynch's depiction of this particular type of violence is ultimately going to be nothing more than set-dressing.
Parts 15 and 16 saw conclusions to many story threads from Season 3 but what would I like to see wrapped up in the last two episodes? The storylines I'd most like to see have some closure are Cooper and Doppel-Coop, Laura and Sarah Palmer, Audrey, Naido and how this will all tie-up with the strange happenings in Twin Peaks, the police department, Jack Rabbits Palace and the black-headed symbol. I'd also be nice, although not essential, to find out more about the glass box in New York, the black box in Buenos Aires, Becky's fate, Bobby and Shelly's relationship, what Red's connection is, the meaning behind the Great Northern mystery sound and who Judy is meant to be.
Part 16 was another eventful, exciting episode but also deepens some of the main problems I've had with Season 3 in general so I'm going to give it a 8/10. But what did you think of Part 16? Finalmente, Audrey llega a The Bang Bang Bar, se dirige a la pista de baile para su canción, es interrumpida por una pelea y luego, de golpe, la escena la muestra en una misteriosa habitación blanca.
Viendo que estamos tan cerca del final de la Temporada 3, había esperado que el impulso narrativo continuase avanzando en la Parte 16 y no me decepcionó. La escena de Doppel-Coop y Richard fue un trabajo desagradable e intrigante y me encantaron los efectos de Richard desintegrándose. También había asumido que habíamos visto lo último de Jerry cuando consiguió salir del bosque, pero su fatídico encuentro con los dos fue genial y proporcionó a la escena una inesperada frivolidad. Del mismo modo, no veía a Chantal y Hutch saliendo de la manera en la que lo hicieron, pero fue un fragmento bastante bueno y una acción extraña, y la culminación de los hermanos Mitchum fue muy graciosa.
Aunque tengo algunos problemas en cómo se manejó, más sobre esto después, no pude evitar sentirme ganador con el despertar de Cooper. Las palabras realmente no pueden describir lo satisfactorio que fue tener a Cooper por fin, de vuelta al 100%, y el momento donde “Falling” comienza a sonar más alto y él dice “Yo soy el FBI” fue simplemente…. Yeah. También me gusto la manera en la que él maneja la situación de Janey-E y Sonny Jim creando una nueva tulpa para ellos (presumiblemente una “mejor” para arrancar, ya que viene directamente de Cooper y no de su doppelgänger) e incluso tengo que admitir que su despedida en el casino fue jodidamente conmovedora.
Y luego llegamos, tal vez, al puto culmen del episodio: Laura Dern y Diane. Laura Dern ha interpretado a Diane de manera brillante durante toda la temporada, pero su actuación en este episodio fue notoria. La manera en la que logra expresar el concepto de tulpa, que se convierte en algo consciente de sí mismo y/o que lucha contra las diferentes partes de su yo, fue impresionante, pero la lacrimosa descripción de su última interacción con Doppel-Coop fue desgarradora. E incluso consigue enganchar en un último y gracioso “Fuck you” a MIKE mientras está en la cabaña negra. La escena de Audrey esta semana fue tan fascinante como desconcertante. Fue maravilloso verla interpretar su clásica danza (y fue en este momento cuando supe que algo iba a pasar), pero a partir de ese momento todo se vuelve más extraño cuando una pelea (muy recurrente en las últimas semanas) estalla y ella se encuentra a sí misma en la habitación blanca, un desarrollo de la trama que me pareció muy prometedor.
Así que acabemos con esto. A pesar de que estoy muy feliz porque finalmente Cooper está de vuelta, no me gustó nada la manera en la que lo llevaron a cabo. En primer lugar, el falso coma fue intensamente frustrante y básicamente inútil. En segundo lugar, y este es el grande, lo que de verdad me irritó fue que salió de él en perfectas condiciones. Básicamente, lo hemos visto ser un tonto comatoso y torpe durante 13 episodios, haciendo muy pocos progresos durante ese tiempo, y, de repente, ¿vuelve como si nada hubiese pasado? En mi opinión, este es un ritmo realmente pobre y me fastidió de verdad. Además, tampoco es creíble porque, al menos por el momento, él está actuando casi como un superhéroe, porque no muestra ningún signo de arrepentimiento, confusión o conflicto en absoluto.
Por último, no me gusta la idea de él se vaya de Twin Peaks con los hermanos Mitchum o su afirmación de que ellos tienen “corazones de oro”. Los hermanos Mitchum son gánsteres desagradables que actúan para las risas (no quiero ver nada más de ellos y no son personas para ser admiradas). La última cosa que me molestó de la Parte 16 es que tanto Richard como Steven, los perpetradores de la mayor parte de violencia en pantalla contra las mujeres esta temporada, están ahora muertos. Todavía está por ver, aún tenemos dos episodios por llegar, pero cada vez parece más probable que la representación de Lynch de este particular tipo de violencia finamente no va a ser nada más que relleno.
Las Partes 15 y 16 visualizaron conclusiones para muchos de los hilos de la Temorada 3, pero ¿qué me gustaría ver en los dos últimos episodios? Los argumentos de los que más me gustaría ver un cierre son los de Cooper y Doppel-Coop, Laura y Sarah Palmer, Audrey, Naido y cómo todo esto se ata a los extraños acontecimientos de Twin Peaks, el departamento de policía, Jack Rabbits Palace y el símbolo de la cabeza negra. También estaría bien, aunque no esencial, averiguar más sobre la caja de cristal en New York, la caja negra en Buenos Aires, el destino de Becky, la relación entre Bobby y Shelly, cuál es la conexión de Red, el significado detrás del misterioso sonido de Great Northern y quién dice ser Judy.
La Parte 16 fue otro episodio ajetreado y emocionante, pero también se hacen más profundos algunos de los principales problemas que he tenido con la Temporada 3 en general, así que voy a darle un 8/10.
