Today I'm going to be reviewing Part 5 but unfortunately I liked this episode even less than the previous two. There'll be spoilers, as usual, so please catch up before watching this video.
There was a lot of plotting this episode. The heavies previously seen following Dougie make a call to a new female character and we're shown a mysterious black box whilst the police in Dakota find Dougie's ring inside the body found in Ruth Davenport's apartment. And the evil doppelgänger Coop sees Bob in the mirror, gets his phone call and causes havoc at the prison.
Back at Twin Peaks our old friend Mike rejects a potential employee due to a poor CV, Frank Truman gets berated by his wife, Amanda Seyfried is introduced as Becky - Shelly's drug addicted daughter (and partner to previously mentioned potential employee and overall creep Steven) - , Hawk and Andy continue looking through old documents in search of Coop, Jacoby reveals his new persona and the meaning behind all that shovel business and a new member of the Horne family turns up in the Bang Bang Bar as a sexually violent criminal.
Dougie also goes back to work and the casino owner gets beat up and replaced by some unsavoury characters. Meanwhile a second set of heavies break into Dougie's abandoned car and set off the explosive device underneath and Jade finds Cooper's key to The Great Northern in her car and puts it in the post. The Pentagon receives word that someone has been trying to access Major Brigg's fingerprints and send someone to check it out. And finally the previously mentioned mystery box is revealed to be in Buenos Aires and turns into a small piece of metal.
So, this is far, far too much plot. We´ve got way too many subplots going on in too many locations which is a problem because a) it's hard to keep a track of what's going on and b) we don't spend enough time with anyone or thing to truly care about them or it. There's way too much time spent with Dougie repeating the same joke – a joke that I didn't find that funny in the first place - over and over again.
The issues surrounding Lynch's treatment of female characters is only getting worse – we had the lamentable scene of Frank's wife, the random girls used as set dressing in the casino and worst of all the horrible scene of sexual violence at the Bang Bang Bar.
I'm worried as it seems like the new season is going to be far too much like Inland Empire than Lynch's previous work in that's really self-indulgent. Perhaps, maybe he shouldn't have been given carte blanche to make whatever he wanted and maybe 18 hours of it is too much. Now, I know that studio interference and creative constrictions are often a real issue for artists but I also think it can work both ways – sometimes creatives need reining in and we all know that budget restrictions can breed creativity.
Don't get me wrong, I like meandering, stilted Lynch for a couple of hours but I'm getting to my breaking point. It almost feels like Lynch wanted to make a new film or series with Maclachlan but knew the only way he could do it the way he wanted to was to slap the Twin Peaks label on it. It's difficult to judge TV shows episode-by-episode and maybe Lynch will bring everything together in a really satisfying way in the end but I'm feeling less and less engaged.
In terms of the good the new story developments are intriguing – the black box and continued allusions to Philip Jefferies, the stuff with Dougie's ring and Major Briggs and everything going on with evil Coop's incarceration. That shot of evil doppelgänger and BOB mixed in the mirror was incredible and the later scene when sets of the all alarms was electrifying.
Caleb Landry Jones and Amanda Seyfried are great additions to the cast and that shot of her getting high in the car was magnificent. And of course Kyle Maclachlan continues to be fantastic, he really is owning this show, and any moment he's allowed to act even slightly human, is incredibly arresting.

Había mucha trama en este espisodio. Los pesados, anteriormente vistos siguiendo a Dougie, dan paso a un nuevo personaje femenino y nos muestran una misteriosa caja negra mientras la policía encuentra en Dakota el anillo de Dougie dentro del cuerpo que se encuentra en el apartamento de Ruth Davenport. Y el malvado doppelgänger Coop ve a Bob en el espejo, recibe su llamada telefónica y causa estragos en la prisión.
De regreso a Twin Peaks nuestro viejo amigo Mike rechaza a un posible empleado porque tiene un curriculum pobre, Frank Truman es reprendido por su esposa, Amanda Seyfried se presenta como Becky - la hija drogadicta de Shelly (y su socio al posible empleado mencionado anteriormente y Steven), Hawk y Andy siguen buscando documentos antiguos en busca de Coop, Jacoby revela su nueva personalidad y el significado detrás de todo ese negocio de la pala y un nuevo miembro de la familia Horne aparece en el Bang Bang Bar y resulta ser un criminal sexualmente violento.
Dougie también vuelve a trabajar y el propietario del casino es golpeado y reemplazado por algunos personajes desagradables. Mientras tanto, un segundo grupo de pesados entran en el coche abandonado de Dougie y ponen en marcha el dispositivo explosivo de debajo y Jade encuentra la llave de Cooper para The Great Northern en su coche y lo pone en el poste.
El Pentágono recibe la noticia de que alguien ha estado tratando de acceder a las huellas dactilares del Mayor Brigg y envian a alguien para comprobarlo. Y por último, la caja misteriosa mencionada anteriormente resulta estar en Buenos Aires y se convierte en una pequeña pieza de metal.
Por lo tanto, esto es una trama demasiado extensa. Tenemos demasiadas subtramas en demasiadas ubicaciones, lo cual es un problema porque a) es difícil seguir la pista de lo que está pasando y b) no pasamos el tiempo suficiente con ninguna cosa o persona como para realmente preocuparnos por ellos. Se pierde demasiado tiempo con Dougie repitiendo la misma broma - una broma que ya no me pareció graciosa en un primer momento - una y otra vez.
Las cuestiones relacionadas con el tratamiento de Lynch de los personajes femeninos sólo empeoran: tuvimos la lamentable escena de la esposa de Frank, las chicas al azar que se usaban un vestidor en el casino y lo peor de todo, la horrible escena de violencia sexual en el Bang Bang Bar. Estoy preocupado porque parece que la nueva temporada va a ser demasiado parecida a Inland Empire. El trabajo anterior de Lynch es realmente auto-indulgente.
Tal vez no deberían haberle dado carta blanca para hacer lo que quisiese y tal vez 18 horas es demasiado.
Ahora, sé que la interferencia del estudio y las restricciones creativas a menudo son un verdadero problema para los artistas, pero también creo que pueden funcionar en ambos sentidos. A veces, los creativos necesitan controlarse y todos sabemos que las restricciones presupuestarias pueden fomentar la creatividad.
No me malinterpretes, me gusta lo disperso, disfruto de Lynch un par de horas, pero estoy llegando a mi punto de ruptura. Es como si Lynch quisiese hacer una nueva película o serie con Maclachlan, pero sabía que la única manera de hacerlo a su modo era estampando la etiqueta de Twin Peaks en ella. Es difícil juzgar programas de televisión episodio por episodio y tal vez Lynch aunará todo de una manera realmente satisfactoria al final, pero me siento cada vez menos comprometido.
En términos positivos, los desarrollos de la nueva historia son intrigantes: la caja negra y las alusiones continuas a Philip Jefferies, el material con el anillo de Dougie y el mayor Briggs y todo lo que sucede con el encarcelamiento de Coop. Ese plano del malvado doppelgänger y BOB mezclado en el espejo fue increíble y la escena posterior cuando suenan todas las alarmas fue electrizante.
Caleb Landry Jones y Amanda Seyfried son grandes apotaciones al reparto y ese plano de ella elevándose en el coche fue magnífico. Y por supuesto Kyle Maclachlan continúa siendo fantástico, él realmente es el dueño de esta serie, y en cualquier momento se puede permitir una actuación ligeramente humana es increíblemente sorprendente.
Realmente me duele decirlo pero realmente no disfruté este episodio mucho y así que voy a darle un 5/10. Pero, ¿qué piensas de la Parte 5?
