Wow...just wow. So I´m still trying to wrap my head around the idea that it's been 10 years since I've seen anything new from David Lynch and 24 hours ago I watched new Twin Peaks. And to top it all off it was very different from what we're used to. But I really, really enjoyed it. It was much darker than previous seasons and even less like a traditional soap or detective, mystery story than before. But damn was it good.
Just a heads up - these are going to be spoiler reviews. So if you haven't watched the first two episodes yet please do so and come back.
So in turns of the plot I absolutely got my wish – almost straight away we find out that Cooper is still trapped in the Black Lodge, is described as missing by the residents of Twin Peaks and he has an evil doppelgänger running around on the other side of the country causing havoc. Meanwhile a young man monitors a mysterious glass box in New York and a new murder is uncovered in South Dakota.
Right from the off it's as wonderfully weird and entrancing as usual but in general pushes it to a level beyond. I have absolutely no idea how someone would feel if they've never watched anything related to Twin Peaks before or if they haven't recently re-watched everything to recap. The characters and imagery are fantastic and very Eraserhead - really creepy, really imaginative. I'm thinking of the creature in the glass box and the evolution of the arm.
And the sound design is once again insane. Now in my previous video I had mentioned that David Lynch was a favourite of mine because he paid a lot of attention to sound design, sound effects etc. But I neglected to mention that he's actually acted as the sound designer on many of his films. Some of the stuff in the black lodge was next level and in general the usual hums and grumbles from below were ever present – never ever quite letting you fully relax.
On the whole it also looks beautiful. As I said before, based on the trailers, we knew it was going to look a lot better than Inland Empire even though it was shot digitally but there's some really nice use of colour and texture in these two episodes. As usual Lynch shows his fantastic talent for showing us something familiar and usual to us but twisting it in such a way as to make it look ugly or alien. Perfect example here being his skylines of New York.
There a couple of moments through the first two episodes which were incredibly scary and it actually made me jump at one point. Of course it was really good to see certain old faces again. It was great seeing everyone at the sheriff's police department and especially seeing Sheryl Lee as Laura Palmer was heartbreaking and fascinating in equal measure. And Cooper's doppelgänger is brilliantly hideous. I had a massive smile on my face when we first saw him appear which quickly drained from my face.
I'm also really enjoying the expanded world and new stories we've got going on here as well. The acting as well is great as everyone seems fully committed to Lynch's vision. Special mention has to go to Matthew Lillard who gives a great performance. I've never seen him act so seriously and intensely. He fits the Lynch universe like a glove and I'm really surprised by how good he was.
There's also some really funny, classic David Lynch moments. Such as the protracted discovery-of-the-body scene, the brothers Horne in general, Lucy and the insurance salesman and perhaps my favourite – Mrs Hastings shouting, “But the Morgans are coming for dinner!” just as her husband is carted off to jail.
But the thing that really struck me was this great sense of melancholy about everything. Everyone seems worn out, tired and older – and not just cosmetically. Of course seeing Catherine Coulson as the Log Lady was heartbreaking. She's quite clearly far along in her cancer treatment in these scenes and although I'm glad she got to play the role for one last time it was definitely bittersweet.
So there was a lot to like about these first two episodes, but it was difficult to adjust expectations at first. I knew it was going to be darker, I knew it was going to be slower – like the second half of Lynch's career – and I knew he was going to delay gratification to a certain degree. But I didn't realise quite how slow, abstract and different it was going to be. If I'm honest I think it was a fraction too stilted.
I understand that he's trying to set a tone here which is clearly different from the first two seasons but it put at somewhat of an emotional remove. It doesn't help as well that a show that was famous for experimenting with camera movement and editing is utilising an extremely static camera.
Overall, like I said, the digital photography looks great, and most of the outlandish imagery is fantastic, but there were a couple of moments here or there where the digital effects looked a little bit cheap. And it was unfortunate to see David Lynch, straight out of the gate, sexually objectifying women and subjecting them to punishing violence repeatedly.
There is, again, an absolute lack of non-white characters and this feels especially disappointing as it's not 1991 any more, it's 2017. Also, weird people are weird! Yes, David Lynch is using people's physical differences, once again, to make things weird and different. I'm thinking specifically of the wheelchair-bound boy and the lanky kid in Buella's house. These three issues are things I brought up in my previous video and I'm not going to bring them up for every single review of the new season and hey, he's still got time to prove me wrong, but they are issues for me.
These two episodes also bring up some brilliant new mysteries and questions to be answered. We think we've got a handle on who the doppelgänger is, it's probably not BOB, some sort of split or negative copy of Agent Dale Cooper. We've got a whole new murder mystery to languish in, but one that definitely seems connected to Cooper's doppelgänger. And we've got the strange business with this glass box, which seems to act as some sort of portal between The Black Lodge and our world, and of course the mystery owner who was mentioned but never named.
In general I really, really enjoyed these two episodes and I'm incredibly excited to see where it goes from here. And I'm going to give them an 8/10. I love that Showtime have had enough confidence in David Lynch to let him do his thing and really push people's expectations although admittedly, again, it did take some getting used to.

Y para colmo todo era muy diferente de lo que estamos acostumbrados. Pero realmente, realmente lo disfruté. Es mucho más oscura que las temporadas anteriores y todavía menos telenovelesca o detectivesca tradicional. Pero es malditamente buena.
Sólo un aviso - estos van a ser comentarios llenos de spoiler. Así que si aún no has visto los dos primeros episodios, hazlo y vuelve.
En términos de la trama se ha cumplido mi deseo completamente - casi enseguida nos enteramos de que Cooper todavía está atrapado en el Lodge Negro, es descrito como desaparecido por los residentes de Twin Peaks y tiene un doppelgänger malvado pululando por el otro lado del país causando estragos. Mientras tanto, un joven maneja una misteriosa caja de vidrio en Nueva York y se descubre un nuevo asesinato en Dakota del Sur.
Ya a priori es tan maravillosamente extraña y fascinante como de costumbre, pero en general la empuja a un nivel más allá. No tengo absolutamente ninguna idea de cómo alguien se sentiría si nunca han visto nada relacionado con Twin Peaks antes o si no han vuelto a ver todo recientemente para recapitular. Los personajes y las imágenes son fantásticas y muy Eraserhead - realmente espeluznante, realmente imaginativo. Estoy pensando en la criatura en la caja de cristal y en la evolución del brazo.
Y el diseño de sonido es una vez más enloquecedor. En mi video anterior ya había mencionado que David Lynch era uno de mis favoritos porque él pagó mucha atención al diseño de sonido, efectos de sonido, etc. Pero descuidé mencionar que en realidad ha actuado como diseñador de sonido en muchas de sus películas. Algunas de las cosas en el Lodge negro son de “siguiente nivel” y en general los zumbidos habituales y murmullos desde abajo están siempre presentes - nunca dejandote que te relajes del todo.
En general se ve hermosa. Como dije antes, basándonos en los trailers ya sabíamos que iba a lucir mucho mejor que Inland Empire aunque fue filmado digitalmente, pero hay un uso realmente agradable del color y la textura en estos dos episodios. Como de costumbre, Lynch muestra su fantástico talento para mostrarnos algo familiar y habitual, pero retorcido de tal manera que lo hace parecer feo o extraño. El ejemplo perfecto aquí vienen siendo sus skylines de Nueva York.
Hay un par de momentos durante los dos primeros episodios que han sido increíblemente aterradores y en realidad me llegaron a sobresaltar en un punto. Por supuesto, fue genial ver a ciertos viejos conocidos de nuevo. Fue lo más ver a todos en el departamento de policía del sheriff, y especialmente ver a Sheryl Lee como Laura Palmer fue desgarrador y fascinante en igual medida. Y doppelgänger de Cooper es brillantemente horrible. Tuve una sonrisa enorme en mi cara cuando lo vimos aparecer por primera vez que rápidamente se borró de mi cara.
También estoy disfrutando del mundo expandido y de las nuevas historias que tenemos aquí también. La actuación también es brillante, ya que todo el mundo parece totalmente comprometido con la visión de Lynch. La mención especial tiene que ir para Matthew Lillard que ofrece una gran actuación. Nunca lo he visto actuar con tanta seriedad e intensidad. Se ajusta al universo de Lynch como un guante y estoy muy sorprendido por lo bueno que era.
También hay algunos momentos muy divertidos y clásicos de David Lynch. Tal como la prolongada escena del descubrimiento del cuerpo, los hermanos Horne en general, Lucy y el vendedor de seguros, y tal vez mi favorito - la señora Hastings gritando: "¡Pero los Morgans vienen a cenar!" mientras se llevan a su marido a la cárcel.
Pero lo que de verdad me impactó fue esta gran sensación de melancolía sobre todo. Todo el mundo parece gastado, cansado y viejo - y no sólo estéticamente. Por supuesto, ver a Catherine Coulson como la Log Lady era desgarrador. Ella está bastante avanzada en su tratamiento contra el cáncer en estas escenas y aunque me alegro de que llegó a desempeñar el papel por última vez fue definitivamente agridulce.
Así que hubo mucho de lo que disfrutar estos dos primeros episodios, pero fue difícil ajustar las expectativas al principio. Sabía que iba a ser más oscura, sabía que iba a ser más lenta- como la segunda mitad de la carrera de Lynch - y sabía que iba a retrasar la gratificación hasta cierto punto. Pero no me di cuenta de lo lenta, abstracta y diferente que iba a ser. Si soy honesto creo que fue un poco demasiado forzada.
Entiendo que él está tratando de establecer un tono aquí que es claramente diferente de las dos primeras temporadas, pero de alguna forma provocó cierto distanciamiento emocional. No ayuda tampoco un espectáculo que fue famoso por experimentar con el movimiento de la cámara y la edición esté utilizando una cámara extremadamente estática. En general, como he dicho, la fotografía digital se ve muy bien, y la mayoría de las imágenes extravagantes son fantásticas, pero hubo un par de momentos aquí o allí donde los efectos digitales se veían un poco barato.
Y era desafortunado ver a David Lynch, desde el primer momento, objetivando sexualmente a las mujeres y sometiéndolas a castigos violentos repetidamente. Hay, una vez más, una absoluta falta de caracteres no blancos y esto se siente especialmente decepcionante ya que no estamos más en 1991, estamos en 2017.
Y además, ¡gente rara siendo rara! Sí, David Lynch está utilizando las diferencias físicas de las personas, una vez más, para hacer cosas extrañas y diferentes. Estoy pensando específicamente en el chico de silla de ruedas y el chico larguirucho en la casa de Buella. Estos tres temas son cosas de las que he hablado en mi video anterior y no voy a comentarlas para cada review de la nueva temporada y hey, todavía tiene tiempo para demostrar que estoy equivocado… pero son problemas para mí.
Estos dos episodios plantean algunos nuevos misterios brillantes y preguntas para responder. Creemos que tenemos una pista sobre quién es el doppelgänger, probablemente no es BOB, algún tipo de copia dividida o negativa del agente Dale Cooper. Tenemos un misterio de asesinato completamente nuevo para investigar, pero que definitivamente parece estar conectado con Doppelgänger de Cooper. Y tenemos el extraño negocio con esta caja de vidrio, que parece actuar como una especie de portal entre The Black Lodge y nuestro mundo, y por supuesto el misterioso propietario que fue mencionado pero nunca nombrado.
En general, realmente disfruté de estos dos episodios y estoy muy emocionado de ver dónde va desde aquí. Y voy a darles un 8/10. Me encanta que Showtime haya tenido suficiente confianza en David Lynch para dejarlo hacer lo suyo y realmente empujar las expectativas, aunque es cierto que, de nuevo, se tomó algo de acostumbrarse.
