Hello and welcome back to Faulty Projector – where we review films of the independent persuasion and the odd blockbuster too. Today we're talking my personal favourite films of 2017 but let's get a couple of things out of the way first. This will be my top 10 films released in the UK in 2017 so films such as Moonlight or La La Land will appear whilst others, such as The Shape of Water or Phantom Thread, will not.
Sadly I missed quite a few films with a 2017 UK release date such as The Death of Stalin, Thor: Ragnarok, Felicite, The Florida Project (yeah, that one stung) and The Disaster Artist so they won't be making an appearance either. Lastly this is a list of my personal favourites, not an attempt at some objective ranking of the 'best' films of the year, and as such were chosen for my emotional reaction to them as much as their ability to wow me technically.
2017 was, as they all are if you look hard enough, an incredible year for cinema and I saw so many good films that it was hard to whittle this down to a top 10. So before we get to the main event here's a quick run down of six runners-up which almost made the cut. The Boy and the Beast, Fences, Detroit, La La Land, Logan and It Comes At Night.
Number 10: Jackie
Director Pablo Larraín is one of the most interesting directors working today and his unique spin on the biopic is as refreshing as Natalie Portman's performance is transformative.
Number 9: Christine
This was a smaller movie which I feel should have gotten a lot more love as it manages to take a true story which could very easily have been exploitative and turned it into something quietly devastating (Rebecca Hall was the bomb too).
Number 8: Mudbound
This is one I reviewed a few weeks back and it hasn't lost an ounce of its power – it's harsh, beautiful and illuminating.
Number 7: Dunkirk
Look up roller-coaster in the dictionary and there'll be a picture of Dunkirk but it also manages to be so much more than that – at times coming of as a beautifully mournful lost silent film or even an abstract, surreal film from an art-house master.
Number 6: mother!
Speaking of roller-coasters...what this film lacks in subtly it more than makes up for in clever allegory, incredible acting and a singular, mind-blowing vision from director Darren Aronofsky.
Number 5: The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)
Every now and then a film comes along that seems so specifically tailor made for you that it's almost scary, also featuring career best work from Stiller and Sandler and surprisingly hilarious editing, it hit me hard.
Number 4: The Killing of a Sacred Deer
Chilling from start to finish, Lanthimos's latest is a simple but highly effective tale which gets under your skin early and doesn't come out for days.
Number 3: Call Me By Your Name
I was sceptical of this film at first as we've seen this story at least a dozen times before and I wasn't a big fan of the directors previous movie but it's nigh on impossible not to get caught up in this gentle, beautifully realistic and moving story (great soundtrack too).
Number 2: A Ghost Story
I knew from the moment I saw it this film was something special and it more than deserves its place so high up on this list for its originality, ambition and the fact that it, somehow, more than sticks the landing.
Number 1: Moonlight
Was there really any other choice? Every once and a while a film comes along that is just indisputably great, using every cinematic tool in the book in a powerful, organic way to craft a character piece for the ages.

Hoy hablaremos de mis películas favoritas de 2017, pero antes aclararé un par de cosas. Esta es mi lista de las 10 mejores películas lanzadas en el Reino Unido en 2017, por lo que aparecerán películas como Moonlight o La La Land, mientras que otras, como The Shape of Water o Phantom Thread, no lo harán.
Lamentablemente, me perdí algunas películas con una fecha de lanzamiento en el Reino Unido de 2017, como La muerte de Stalin, Thor: Ragnarok, Felicite, The Florida Project (sí, esa duele) y The Disaster Artist por lo que tampoco harán una aparición. Por último, esta es una lista de mis favoritos personales, no un intento de clasificación objetiva de las "mejores" películas del año, y como tal fueron elegidos tanto por mi reacción emocional hacia ellos como por su habilidad para impresionarme técnicamente.
2017 fue, como todos los años si miras con atención, un año increíble para el cine y vi tantas buenas películas que fue difícil reducirlas a un top 10. Entonces, antes de entre, aquí hay una lista rápida de seis subcampeones que casi lograron el corte. The Boy and the Beast (El Niño y la Bestia), Fences, Detroit, La La Land, Logan y It Comes at Night (Llega de Noche).
Número 10: Jackie
El director Pablo Larraín es uno de los directores más interesantes que trabajan en la actualidad y su impronta única en el biopic es tan refrescante como transformadora es la actuación de Natalie Portman.
Número 9: Christine
Esta fue una película más pequeña que creo que debería haber recibido mucho más atención, ya que se las arregla para tomar una historia real que podría haber sido muy fácilmente explotadora y convertirla en algo silenciosamente devastador (Rebecca Hall también fue la bomba).
Número 8: Mudbound:
Esta es una de las películas de las que hice crítica hace unas semanas y que no ha perdido ni una pizca de su poder: es dura, bella e iluminadora.
Número 7: Dunkirk (Dunkerque)
Busca en el diccionario “ montaña rusa “y habrá una foto de Dunkirk, pero también logra ser mucho más que eso. A veces viene como una película muda perdida y bellamente melancólica o incluso como la película abstracta y surrealista de un artista.
Número 6: Mother! (¡Madre!)
Hablando de montañas rusas ... lo que a esta película le falta en sutileza lo compensa con unas alegorías ingeniosas, unas actuaciones increíbles y la visión singular y alucinante del director Darren Aronofsky.
Número 5: The Meyerowitz Stories- New and Selected
De vez en cuando aparece una película que parece tan específicamente hecha a medida para ti que es casi aterrador, también presenta el mejor trabajo de Stiller and Sandler y una edición sorprendentemente hilarante, me impactó mucho.
Número 4: The Killing of a Sacred Deer. (El Sacrificio de un Ciervo Safgrado)
Escalofriante de principio a fin, el último film de Lanthimos es un cuento simple pero muy efectivo, que se te mete rápido en la piel y no desaparece en días.
Número 3: Call me by your Name. (Llámame por tu Nombre)
Era un escéptico de esta película al principio, ya que hemos visto esta historia al menos una docena de veces y no soy un gran admirador de la anterior película de los directores, pero es casi imposible no quedar atrapado en esta suave, hermosamente realista y conmovedora historia (buena banda sonora además).
Número 2: A Ghost Story
Desde el momento en que la vi supe que esta película es algo especial y merece su lugar tan arriba en esta lista por su originalidad, ambición y el hecho de que, de alguna manera, más que acierta en el aterrizaje.
Número 1: Moonlight
¿Realmente había otra opción? De vez en cuando aparece una película que es indiscutiblemente genial, utilizando todas las herramientas cinematográficas de libro de una manera poderosa y orgánica para crear una obra de personaje para la posteridad.
