Hello and welcome back to Faulty Projector – where we review films of the independent persuasion and the odd blockbuster too. Today's film is I, Tonya. I, Tonya is a sports biopic directed by Craig Gillespie which is released in the UK and Spain next month. It stars Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan, Allison Janney and charts the rise and fall of infamous figure skater Tonya Harding. Man was this film a surprise! Judging from the trailer I was expecting a fun, black humoured film but little more and I couldn't have been more wrong.
Given the subject matter this could have very easily have been sensationalistic and exploitative but instead it's a surprisingly smart and sympathetic piece of work. It deals heavily with real emotional and social problems such as domestic abuse, classism and working class environments in a blunt but honest way. It also acts as an insightful and important reframing of a popular story which cleverly implicates not only the usual suspects, the establishment, the media etc., but also the viewer themselves to startling effect. It is, by it's very nature, a unique and weird true story which is interesting and enlightening but also a lot of fun as the heaviness of the subject matter is expertly balanced by the pride these characters have not only in their personal achievements but also in their backgrounds.
I cannot, of course, talk about I, Tonya without giving a massive shout-out to the acting on display as its truly phenomenal. Margot Robbie gives not only a great performance in a career which has thus far been littered with - let's be honest - less-than-steller roles but one for the ages, imbuing Harding with a resounding strength but also a very human sense of fragility and foolhardiness. Allison Janney is as menacing as she is magnetic, somehow always managing to outperform herself in the awfulness stakes just when you think she might turn a corner, and even Sebastian Stan provides just enough layers to his horrific turn as Tonya's husband Jeff so that you can never fully hate him.
On a technical level the film does great work with its fluid camera movement which makes everything that extra bit more involving and its brilliant pace owes much to its impressive editing. The editing, which I really can't praise enough, also feeds into why this film is also, at times, hilarious, as it juxtaposes different perceptions of events in mocked-up present day interviews. It also plays with the idea of “the truth” in a fun and clever way, providing a post-modernistic spin on how we present real life events and subtly planting doubt about exactly what went down in the audiences minds. The films period setting (and sense of cultural identity) is also lovely recreated in its pitch perfect use of appropriate needle drops, costuming, hair and make-up.
There's not much bad to say about I, Tonya but for the earlier scenes where Tonya and Jeff are teenagers they really should have hired different actors to portray them (as they did for Tonya as a child) as it was really unconvincing and distracting watching Robbie and Stan try to pass for 15 or 18 year olds. I'd also say that one of the last scenes, featuring an older Harding trying her hand at boxing, felt like too much physical punishment for me as we'd already seen her go through so much (and with much more personal meaning) throughout the film.
I, Tonya is a testament to the old adage that there's always more than one side to a story which, thanks to magnificent performances and style to spare, is as affecting as it is entertaining. I'm going to give it a 8/10 and would recommend it to fans of Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Winters Bone, The Bronze and To Die For. I should also point out that I was too young to notice the incident when it actually occurred but I think that, because it's also about so much more than that this, it doesn't really matter. I, Tonya es una película biográfica de deportes dirigida por Craig Gillespie que se lanzará en el Reino Unido y España el próximo mes. Está protagonizada por Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan, Allison Janney y representa el ascenso y caída de la controvertida patinadora artística Tonya Harding. ¡Vaya si fue una sorpresa! A juzgar por el trailer, esperaba una película divertida de humor negro y poco más, y no podría haber estado más equivocado.
Dado el tema, podría haber sido muy fácilmente una película sensacionalista y explotadora, pero en cambio es una obra sorprendentemente inteligente y comprensiva. Se ocupa en gran medida de problemas emocionales y sociales reales, como el abuso doméstico, el clasismo y los entornos de la clase trabajadora de una manera contundente pero honesta. También actúa como una relectura perspicaz e importante de una historia popular que implica hábilmente no solo a los sospechosos habituales (el establecimiento, los medios, etc.) sino también al propio espectador con un efecto sorprendente. Es, por su propia naturaleza, una historia verdadera única y extraña, que es interesante e iluminadora pero también muy divertida, ya que la pesadez del tema está equilibrada por el orgullo que estos personajes tienen no solo por sus logros personales sino también por su entorno.
No puedo, por supuesto, hablar de "yo", Tonya, sin dar un gran aplauso al trabajo actoral, que es realmente fenomenal. Margot Robbie ofrece no solo una gran actuación en una carrera que hasta ahora ha estado plagada, honestamente, de papeles poco estelares, sino de una actuación antológica, lo que infunde a Harding una fuerza rotunda pero también de una sensación muy humana de fragilidad y temeridad. Allison Janney es tan amenazante como magnética, de alguna manera siempre logra superarse a sí misma en los momentos terribles, justo cuando crees que puede doblar una esquina. Sebastian Stan incluso proporciona las capas suficientes para su horrible personaje de Jeff, el marido de Tonya, para que nunca puedas odiarlo completamente.
A nivel técnico, la película hace un gran trabajo con un movimiento fluido de cámara que hace que todo sea un poco más extra envolvente y su ritmo brillante se debe en gran parte a su impresionante edición. La edición, que realmente no puedo alabar lo suficiente, también alimenta el por qué esta película es, a veces, divertida, ya que yuxtapone las diferentes percepciones de los eventos con las entrevistas de hoy en día. También juega con la idea de "la verdad" de una manera divertida e inteligente, proporcionando un giro posmodernista sobre cómo presentamos eventos de la vida real y plantea sutilmente dudas sobre qué fue exactamente lo que caló en la opinión pública. La época en la que se desarrolla la película (y el sentido de la identidad cultural) también se recrea estupendamente, en su afinado uso de la música, vestuario, cabello y maquillaje.
No hay muchas cosas malas que decir sobre I, Tonya, pero para las escenas tempranas en las Tonya y Jeff son adolescentes, realmente deberían haber contratado a diferentes actores para retratarlos (como lo hicieron con Tonya de niña), ya que fue muy poco convincente y distractor ver a Robbie y Stan intentar pasar por gente de 15 o 18 años. También diría que una de las últimas escenas, con una Harding más mayor probando su mano en el boxeo, me pareció demasiado castigo físico, ya que ya la había visto sufrir tanto (y con un significado mucho más personal) a lo largo de toda la película.
I, Tonya, es un testamento del viejo adagio de que siempre hay más de un lado de una historia que, gracias a las magníficas actuaciones y el estilo de sobra, es tan emocionante como entretenida. Voy a darle un 8/10 y se lo recomendaría a los fans de Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Winters Bone, The Bronze y To Die For. También debo señalar que era demasiado joven para darme cuenta del incidente cuando realmente ocurrió, pero creo que, porque también trata de mucho más que de eso, en realidad no tiene tanta importancia.¿Pero has visto I, Tonya y qué piensas de ella?
