Twin Peaks Season 3 Part 7 Review (With Spanish Subtitles)

Hello and welcome back to my weekly reviews of the new season of Twin Peaks. Today I'm going to be reviewing Part 7 which again proved to be a big step up for the series. There'll be spoilers, as usual, so please watch the episode in question before this review.

This week Frank Truman is presented with the notes found by Hawk, which do turn out to be pages from Laura's diary, and begins his investigation into doppelgänger Coop. Andy finds the owner of the truck Richard Horne was driving in the hit-and-run and sets up a sketchy meeting, the army officer arrives in Dakota and discovers the body of Major Briggs and Diane pays doppelgänger Coop a visit in prison.

Meanwhile doppelgänger Coop blackmails the prison warden and arranges his escape and Dougie/Coop thwarts Ike's assassination attempt. Ben Horne receives Cooper's key to The Great Northern whilst investigating a strange, unlocatable sound and we learn a bit more about Beverley's home life. Finally we discover that the owner of The Bang Bang Bar, Jean Michel Renault, is involved in Twin Peak's prostitution scene and someone runs into the Double R Diner desperately asking if anyone has seen “Bing”.

Like Part 5 there was a hell of a lot of plot to sieve through this week but unlike that episode it was far more coherent and satisfying. There was a huge sense of pay-off to Part 7 and it was really exciting seeing all the pieces slowly fall into place. Laura Dern as Diane was a blast; swinging from crude to heartbreaking in a beat and her scene with doppelgänger Coop was intense. I also really enjoyed the doppelgänger's escape plan, man is this performance creepy, and learning about the new discoveries about him by the FBI.

Watching Dougie/Coop's instincts kick-in and take out Ike was crazy intense and the short scene of the 'man in black' stalking around the Dakota police station gave me chills. Like seeing Catherine Coulson as The Log Lady it was really tough watching Warren Frost portray Doc Will Hayward for the last time but I'm so glad they managed to fit him in somehow and it has handled perfectly. Plus I need to get one of those awesome desk monitors!

There were some hilarious scenes this week such as Jerry Horne getting too stoned in the woods, the previously mentioned foul-mouth of Diane and I had a big smirk on my face during the Bang Bang Bar sweep up scene. Hell, even Dougie's scene at work was amusing this week, although that's probably down to its relatively short run time and the always welcome inclusion of Janey-E. There were also various great uses of music, some hauntingly atmospheric shots of the forests surrounding Twin Peaks, great utilisation of classic Lynch sound design in several key scenes and much more variety in framing and camerawork overall.

In terms of the bad this week there was only really one thing that stood out to me – the news footage after Ike's foiled attack. It was jarringly out of place, it looked cheap as hell and Ike's prosthetic piece of flesh looked stupid. I've praised this episode for bringing a lot of plot threads together and providing us with a lot of substantial narrative but it was almost overwhelming at times and further cements my feeling that the series as a whole is either too long or could have been structured in a more balanced manner.

A whole lot got answered this week – we know what the notes Hawk found were, Ben has received the room key, Ike has been taken care of, Major Brigg's body has been confirmed and the FBI are inching closer to the truth about Cooper – but there's still much to discover.

What exactly did doppelgänger Coop do to both Audrey and Diane? Who is this 'man in black' and what is his connection to everything? Has Andy turned to the dark side and what happened to the owner of the truck? “Bing” is credited as Riley Lynch, David's son and guitarist for the band Trouble which we saw in Part 5, but why is someone looking for him so desperately? And finally, and perhaps most troubling, now that doppelgänger Coop's out of prison what will be his next moves?

Esta semana Frank Truman se presenta con las notas encontradas por Hawk, que resultan ser páginas del diario de Laura, y comienza su investigación en doppelgänger Coop. Andy encuentra al dueño del camión, Richard Horne que estaba conduciendo en el atropello y organiza una reunión sospechosa, el oficial del ejército llega a Dakota y descubre que el cuerpo del Mayor Briggs, y Diane le paga al doppelgänger Coop una visita en la cárcel.

Mientras tanto, el doppelgänger Coop chantajea al director de la prisión y arregla su huida y Dougie / Coop frustra el intento de asesinato de Ike. Ben Horne recibe la llave de Cooper al Gran Norte mientras investiga un sonido extraño y no localizable y aprendemos un poco más sobre la vida en casa de Beverley. Finalmente descubrimos que el dueño de The Bang Bang Bar, Jean Michel Renault, está involucrado en la trama de la prostitución en Twin Peaks y alguien irrumpe en el Double R Diner desesperadamente preguntando si alguien ha visto "Bing".

Al igual que la Parte 5, hubo un montón de trama para analizar esta semana, pero a diferencia de ese episodio fue mucho más coherente y satisfactorio. Había una enorme sensación de recompensa en la Parte 7 y fue realmente emocionante ver todas las piezas lentamente caer en su lugar. Laura Dern como Diane fue una explosión; Balanceándose de cruda a desgarradora en un segundo y su escena con Doppelgänger Coop fue intensa. También me gustó mucho el plan de escape del doppelgänger- esta performance es espeluznante- y descubrir los nuevos descubrimientos sobre él por el FBI.

Ver como los instintos de Dougie / Coop aparecen y neutralizar a Ike fue una locura y la corta escena del "hombre en negro" acechando alrededor de la comisaría de Dakota me dio escalofríos. Al igual que ver entonces a Catherine Coulson como The Log Lady, fue muy difícil ver a Warren Frost retratar a Doc Will Hayward por última vez, pero estoy tan contento de que lograron adaptarlo de alguna manera y se ha gestionado perfectamente. ¡Además necesito conseguir uno de esos monitores de escritorio impresionantes!

Hubo algunas escenas hilarantes esta semana, como Jerry Horne fumado en el bosque, la antes mencionada mala lengua de Diane y tuve una gran sonrisa en mi cara durante la escena en la barra del bar Bang Bang. Demonios, incluso la escena de Dougie en el trabajo fue divertida esta semana, aunque probablemente debido a su relativamente corto tiempo de ejecución y la siempre bienvenida inclusión de Janey-E. También hubo varios fantásticos usos de la música, algunos de los encuadres atmosféricos de los bosques que rodean a Twin Peaks, la gran utilización del clásico diseño de sonido de Lynch en varias escenas clave y mucha más variedad en el encuadre y la cámara en general.

En términos de lo malo de esta semana sólo hubo una cosa que me llamó la atención: las imágenes de las noticias después del ataque frustrado de Ike. Estaba obviamente fuera de lugar, parecía de lo más barata y la pieza prostética de carne de Ike se veía estúpida. He elogiado este episodio por traer un montón de hilos de trama juntos y proporcionarnos con una gran cantidad de narrativa sustancial, pero fue a veces abrumadora a veces y cementó mi sensación de que la serie en su conjunto es demasiado larga o podría haber sido estructurada de manera más equilibrada.

Un montón de cosas se respondieron esta semana - sabemos lo que las notas que Hawk encontró fueron, Ben ha recibido la llave de la habitación, Ike ha sido puesto bajo cuidado, se ha confirmado el cuerpo del Brigad Major y el FBI están acercándose a la verdad sobre Cooper - pero todavía hay mucho que descubrir.

¿Qué hizo exactamente doppelgänger Coop a Audrey y Diane? ¿Quién es este "hombre de negro" y cuál es su conexión con todo? ¿Se ha vuelto Andy al lado oscuro y qué le pasó al dueño del camión? Y, finalmente, y quizás lo más preocupante, ahora que doppelgänger Coop está fuera de la cárcel ¿cuáles serán sus próximos movimientos?
